Dark days
So, I love bright colours and wild patterns, but about once per week I wear some combination of the pieces shown: an LBD or black skirt, a black cardigan or v-neck sweater, statement jewellery, black tights, black shoes. I find there’s just something super-chic about an all-black outfit.

Falling for you

Falling for you
Ugh. If I had JQ's legs, I don't know what I would do—but I know what I would refrain from doing: hiding them in frumpy knee-length skirts.

JQ's recent outfit revolves around picking an outfit she could wear while cycling. Why a skirt would ever seem like a good idea, I'm not sure.

Here I've picked an outfit more suitable for cycling. In that enormous backpack, carry a few things to quickly change into at the office: a skirt, a pair of tights, some more attractive shoes, as well as a smaller bag for when you pop out for lunch or whatever.

Barcelona
I didn't mind the dress too much, though in terms of practicality, I wouldn't have gone with this for a day of sightseeing. That bag looks damn heavy, and nothing screams "tourist!" more than a backpack (except maybe a map). I can't tell the height of the boots, but if they're heels—well, they might be comfortable for the office, but after eight hours of walking around? Probably not.

As JC Penney is a sponsor, I've used several of the MNG by Mango pieces for the look.

Initially I was going to do a skinny pants look, but I just imagined myself constantly pulling them up as I walked around looking at stuff. So, I went for a casual dress (tights optional, depending on the weather). The coat and scarf could be added/discarded as well. A cross body bag and comfortable boots finish the look.

The overall outfit says well-dressed but not overly ostentatious—good for when you're wanting to be comfortable but not stand out too much in a new location.

Vancouver purchases

Vancouver purchases
I recently had the opportunity to travel to Vancouver, B.C. I love that city. It has a great aura; in terms of Canadian shopping meccas, its only competitor would be Toronto. It was my first chance to go to The Room @ The Bay and a full-sized Sephora. I also browsed Holt Renfrew (and got more excited than necessary when I tried on the Prada minimal baroque sunglasses) and several boutiques along Robson Street. I was on a budget (unfortunately—why is it that whenever you’re pinching pennies you see the best stuff?) but did come home with a few purchases.

Makeup (items shown are very similar but not exact matches to my purchases): MAC amplified lipstick in Show Orchid (a very bright pink); MAC eyeshadow in Sumptuous Olive (olive green with gold undertones); Nails Inc nail polish in Chelsea Square (an amazing glittery metallic pink).

Clothing: A dress similar to this one from The Gap; this vintage pullover from Levi’s (saw it and loved it immediately—and on a side note, it was great to see so many mustard yellow items!); boots almost identical to these from Aldo (a “responsible” purchase—I saw many other pairs I liked more, but knew these would be the most useful).

Accessories: A ribcage necklace (mine’s gold and sadly not diamond-encrusted); these fun sunglasses that make me look like a rock star.

Just having fun
This was me just having a bit of fun looking through different items. I saw a cool outfit online of an all-yellow outfit and decided just to do a set of monochromatic outfits. I don't wear full skirts myself but knew a full skirt/tank top was the silhouette I wanted. I found matching shoes and diamond jewelery to go with it.

Rocker chic

Rocker chic
This outfit started as me attempting to put together a maxi skirt and heels look. The process was quite a bit of fun, though I’ve obviously ended in quite a different place than I started.

I began with a purple maxi skirt, and wanted to find a skull-emblazoned top for a girly/rocker mix. This frilled purple skirt is almost the same colour as the maxi skirt, but I decided I liked it more. I even found perfectly matching tights, which I took as a sign from above to switch gears and build a look for when I felt like working a rocker chick image—with my own spin put on it.

For makeup, I’d focus on my eyes, using a swipe of gold and a flash of colour at the outside of my eyelid. I’d finish it off with some black eyeliner (top lid only!)

I wanted ostentatious accessories, so I went with an eye-searing neon bag, big chandelier earrings and embellished shoes to finish things off. These heels are all from the same brand; I would go for the top left or bottom right if I had a choice.

Inspired by sunrises
I wanted to create a set this morning, but didn’t know where to start. Looking out my front window, I saw the sun coming up over the mountains, and decided to use this as my inspiration.

The sky was lined with stripes of pink and purple stratus (?) clouds. I looked for an ombre-patterned shirt to reflect this; I’m not sure I’d describe this shirt as ombre, but the ruffles and stripes jumped out at me.

The colour of the mountains was hard to describe—almost a steel grey. I couldn’t find a pair of jeans that quite reflected the colour, so I went for these grey ones.

I loved both of these shoes, and, as the sun rose, the pink colour changed to blue. I’d wear the boots for a casual look, and the heels for when I was needing to look a little more dressy, like if I was going out for dinner.

I thought this was a decidedly feminine look, so I wanted that to be reflected in the bag. I wanted a round white bag; this one is smaller than I’d use in my day-to-day, but the shape and quilted look fits the bill.

I chose pearl earrings for a cloudlike look. For the ring, I wanted a fire opal—I don’t think this is a fire opal but it still manages to reflect the sun.

Inspired by Autumn
I decided to do a Fall-inspired look, but wasn't sure where to start. I didn't want to rest on the standard New England-landscape colours and riding boots.

I started thinking about what stands out to me in Fall. When I walk home, there are several trees with brilliant leaves that stand out against the sky. One of them has bright red leaves—this was the beginning of my outfit with the red and blue blouse.

I paired it with a brown skirt and brown tights. It took me a bit to pick out a skirt; I wasn't sure about what length was best as many of the longer ones looked frumpy with the unstructured top. Eventually I decided on a shorter one.

I loved these booties and would wear them in any season, though the red colour made me think of fallen leaves. I like how I've recreated the idea of a tree without using any greens. I did add some bright red earrings with a leaflike shape.

Choosing a bag was a bit of a process. I knew I wanted an irregular shape without being totally unstructured, but I didn't want any harsh lines. I was looking for some sort of embellishments—initially I had some fringed pieces selected. I loved this bucket bag—not only does it have a fun pattern, but the colours work too.

Bright tights done right

Bright tights done right
JQ often adds bright tights to her outfits. I often take them away for my revamped looks. But lest anyone think that I hate coloured tights, let me state that I absolutely don’t and wear them regularly.

However, there have been many occasions when I’ve been late leaving the house because I had to change my tights because then colours clashed. There is no faster way to look clownlike than a poorly chosen pair of neon tights.

Here, I’ve done up a few looks with bright tights that work. Clockwise from top left:

This pale shirt dress lets the pink tights do the talking.

Mustard tights contrast with the grey shirt dress without looking totally ridiculous.

A colour blocked look with neon green tights.

Bright blue and white make for a fresh feel, especially during the summer; silver jewelry would be a nice accent here.

A fun colourful look with purple tights, bringing out the purple in the dress.

In an eclectic mood

In an eclectic mood
This is the kind of look I'd do (and have done—it's based off a similar outfit I wore last spring) on a day where I felt particularly "wear ALL the looks."

I generally like my sweaters fitted, but will make exceptions for ones with quirky designs, like this sequined poodle. I went for a contrasting colour on bottom (but found sweet matching fishnet tights).

I spent a little time hunting down a suitable shoe; I normally wear heels but didn't want a stiletto pump. These snakeskin wedges are fun (though decidedly out of my price range!)

A bright lip and otherwise toned-down makeup would complete the look. I'd use a bit of dry shampoo for some body in my hair.
